Mr. Lloyd Mangrum, also known as “Mr. Icicle” because of his smooth swing and his relaxed demeanor on the course, turned professional golfer at age fifteen. When his career was finished, he had achieved 36 PGA tour wins and a total of 46 world wide wins. Lloyd turned down a head pro job at Fort Meade to serve in World War II, where he was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded TWO Purple Hearts for his services. His best years on tour came after the war: He led the PGA tour money list in 1951 and won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average on tour in 1951 and 1953. Mangrum finished in the top ten at the Masters Tournament ten consecutive years. In 1940 he shot a tournament record 64 in the opening round, a record that stood for 46 years. He won the US Open in 1946, and was in the famous playoff with Ben Hogan in 1950 at the Merion Cricket Club. Lloyd was on the Ryder Cup teams from 1947 to 1953, in 1953 he was a playing captian. In the four cup matches he won 75% of his matches with zero losses. Lloyd Mangrum passed away from his 12th heart attack in 1973 right here in Apple Valley, where he made his home for over 20 year. Lloyd was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998, on his first ballot, with 77% of the votes.
Roy Rogers & Dale Evans live and played golf right here at Apple Valley Golf Club. His career spanned both silent and talking pictures. Roy was selected most favorite cowboy for 10 straight years from 1942 – 1952. Moving here in 1965 Roy lived here until death in 1998 and Dale followed in 2001. They were married for 51 years. Roy and Dale had 5 children between them and adopted another 4 from around the world.
Richard Nixon after losing the presidential race to John F. Kennedy in 1960 lived in a home on the back 9 of our course. During that time he wrote ” The 6 Crisis”, a book about his time as Dwight Eisenhower’s Vice President.
